Full-Time Archivist Librarian, Grade X / Adult Young Adult Services Department

The Oak Lawn Public Library has an opening for a full-time Archivist Librarian, Grade X, in the Adult Young Adult Services Department. This is a 37 ½ – hours per week “exempt” position with a work schedule that includes evenings and weekends. Salary is $49,156.08 per year in the Adult Young Adult Services Department. An excellent benefits package includes position with a full benefits package, (i.e., vacation, sick, personal business, birthday holiday, and insurance benefits as well as IMRF pension plan participation), per the current Administrative Regulation ARs.

Job Duties:

  • This job description contains the facts necessary to distinguish it from other positions. It is not a detailed description of every task and the Library may add or change tasks.
  • Contribute to the success of the Library’s strategic plan by curating the Library’s local history collections, creating and presenting relevant exhibits, and by providing excellent adult librarian reference and customer services.
  • Facilitate acquisition, preservation, arrangement, description, and access to physical and born-digital materials. Maintain and promote the archival database.
  • Teach archival instruction, create exhibits, contribute to library programming, and engage in community outreach activities.
  • Train assistants according to established archival standards and procedures, schedule, supervise, and evaluate the work of assistants and volunteers.
  • Oversee the adult reference desk in coordination with other librarians. Answer informational and directional questions placed via any format. Assist patrons in locating information and materials. Assist patrons in the use of library equipment. Provide Reader’s Advisory Service.
  • Maintain, develop, and promote the library’s physical and digital collections relevant to community needs; recommend materials for purchase, weed and update existing collection as assigned.
  • Keep informed of developments in the library and archival fields through reading and participation in professional activities and meetings.
  • Perform other tasks assigned by department supervisor.
  • Assume responsibility for Adult Young Adult Services Department in the absence of the supervisor and for the library system in the absence of the scheduled person in charge.

Position Requirements:

Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program; Archivist Certification preferred, or documented archival experience; Minimum of two years professional experience working adult reference;  Excellent oral and written communication, keen analytical skills, confident public speaking; A strong sense of responsibility, confidentiality, collegiality, and personal initiative;  Ability to work with standard computer applications and databases and working in a digital environment; Schedule includes evenings and weekends

Part-Time Archive Assistant, Grade III / Adult Young Adult Services Department

The Oak Lawn Public Library has an opening for a part-time Archive Assistant, Grade III, in the Adult Young Adult Services Department. This is a 12 – hours per week “non-exempt” position with a work schedule that includes evenings and weekends. Salary is $13.05 per hour in the Adult & Young Adult Services Department.

Job Duties:

  • Assist the Archivist Librarian to facilitate the use of the local history collection.
  • Input new records into the Past Perfect catalog and assist with updating catalog posts.
  • Scan and digitally file photographs, maintain physical filing and storage of physical photographs as directed by Archivist.
  • Assist with exhibit preparation, installation, breakdown, and storage.
  • Perform physical and digital material inventories as assigned.
  • Undertake research assignments as directed by Archivist.
  • Assist with patron research requests.

Position Requirements:

High school diploma required, some college or museum training desirable; Ability to work with the public and an interest in community history; Excellent oral and written communication, keen analytical skills, an eye for detail, a strong sense of responsibility, confidentiality, collegiality, and personal initiative; Ability to work with standard computer applications and databases and working in a digital environment; Schedule includes evenings and weekends
