Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator 

The McHenry County Historical Society & Museum in Union, Ill. seeks a full-time Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator. He or she is responsible for recruiting, sustaining and organizing members and volunteers, as well as helping develop/coordinate educational programs. A college degree, experience working for a nonprofit or museum, and familiarity with McHenry County pluses. Strong communication and interpersonal skills required, including public speaking and writing. Must have database management skills and should be familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel/ Access. Familiarity with or willing to learn about Neon CRM. Standard business schedule with some weekends/evenings required.

Research Library Collections Assistant 

Job Type: Part-time, temporary funded 15-week position. Can work up to 24 hours per week. 

Salary: $14 per hour.

Start Date: June 1, 2022  

The McHenry County Historical Society in Union, Illinois seeks a qualified and motivated Research Library Collections Assistant to continue a comprehensive inventory, cataloging, and digitization of our Research Library collection. The collections within the Research Library consists of paper-based documents including, but not limited to printed materials, photographs, maps, newspapers, periodicals, select business and organizational records and biographical material. 

The Research Library Collections Assistant will work directly under the supervision of the Exhibits Curator at the McHenry County Historical Society’s Museum, 6422 Main St. Union, IL. 

The Research Library Collections Assistant will perform the following duties: 

  • Research and supplement information in the collections database, PastPerfect.

  • Catalog permanent and undocumented Research Library collection.

  • Handle and relocate Research Library collection into proper archival storage. 

  • Document scanning of Research Library collection.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Candidates with a background in history, library science or museum studies. 

  • Preference will be given to candidates who have completed course work in collections management and/or experience working or volunteering with a museum collection or archives.  

  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office.

  • Familiarity with collections software with a preference for PastPerfect.

General Requirements

  • Descriptive writing skills.

  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

  • Must be able to work at least 1 Saturday a month.

Grace Moline Special Projects Internship - Photography (PAID)

Reports to: Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator


Our Summer 2022 internship will be overseeing and completing a special project where she/he will collect digital images of historically important buildings in the community and aid in the development of an online program and/or exhibit for the museum. In addition to compensation, our interns will gain important general job skills, build out their writing/photography/other portfolios, and receive professional mentoring from staff and appropriate board members.


  • Produce a clear, aesthetically pleasing portfolio of digital images of McHenry County Historical sites of significance in accordance with the needs of the historical society.

  • Develop educational descriptions for the photo portfolio to be published with the photos.

  • Assist staff in developing future uses of the portfolio. Possible uses could include online exhibits, educational programs, and more.

  • Maintain and communicate needed supplies for your project, communicating with staff about supply needs or issues in a timely manner.

Time Commitment and Compensation: Limited-Term – anticipated start date June 1, 2022 (flexible); 10 weeks at 20 hours/week, not to exceed 200 hours. On-site work with some travel (reimbursement available). $15.00/hr.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current student or recent college graduate majoring in Architecture, History, Interior Design, Museum Studies, Photography, or similar program; preference given to McHenry County College students.

  • Regular transportation and the ability and willingness to travel within McHenry County, IL as needed.

Skills and Recommended Proficiencies:

  • General Photography Knowledge; familiarity with digital cameras and editing.

  • Able to self-direct and individually manage tasks when needed.

  • College-level writing skills.

  • Basic skills with Microsoft Suite.

  • Familiarity with McHenry County roads preferred.
