Collections Assistant
Part-time, temporary grant-funded position beginning October 2017; 20-25 hours per week, to a total of 650 hours.
Salary: $14 per hour

The McHenry County Historical Society seeks a qualified and motivated individual to complete a comprehensive inventory, digitization and rehousing project of our costume and textile storage area. The textile collection includes men’s, women’s and children’s clothing dating from the 1860s-1970s as well as coats, undergarments, military uniforms, quilts, bedding, and household textiles. Working with the Exhibits Curator, the Collections Assistant will be handling and moving historical garments and textiles, cataloging and supplementing the information in the collections database (PastPerfect) and photographing them.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • This position is appropriate for an individual with a Bachelor’s or higher degree in history, costume studies, library science or museum studies.

  • Preference will be given to candidates who have completed course work in collections management and/or experience working or volunteering with a museum collection or archives.  

  • Familiarity with collections software with a preference for PastPerfect.

 

General Requirements

  • Must be able to lift 20 lbs.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Descriptive writing skills.

  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

  • Photography experience.
