Shop Manager

The Illinois State Museum Society (ISMS) Shop Manager is tasked with reestablishing a
profitable retail presence at the Illinois State Museum (ISM) Springfield location. This position
will plan, analyze, and redirect an expanding merchandising mix that creates and balances
visitor/customer demand with appropriate souvenir, gift and, educational/informational
merchandise reflective of the Museum and its programming.

The Shop Manager reports to the ISM Director of Operations.

This is a full-time (40 hours per week) position; it is salaried with benefits. This position is
located in Springfield, Illinois.

Key Responsibilities:
• Develop a business plan for the launch of a “Made in Illinois” brand for the new museum
• Oversee the renovation of the museum shop and serve as project manager for overall
shop project.
• As part of the run-up to shop opening, operate “pop-up” shops to support events and as
an opportunity for product testing.
• Create baseline product mix and merchandising.
• Coordinate appropriate merchandising, including customized merchandise, to enhance
new exhibits and programs.
• Create dynamic visual merchandising strategies.
• Preform day to day operations including open; close, point of sale.
• Hire, train and manage volunteer, intern and, employed staff.
• Ensure quality customer service that provides a positively memorable purchasing
• Create work that is visible to the citizens of Illinois and nurture a team work ethic across
ISM locations.
Basic/Required Qualifications:
• Minimum of three years retail key holder, retail supervisory, cash-handling, open/close,
and customer service experience.
• Strong merchandising skills including product mix, visual arrangement and
demonstration, inventory, and purchasing.
• Must be able to work a flexible schedule, weekends, evenings, and holidays.
• Have a welcoming, positive, and engaging demeanor with excellent interpersonal skills.
• Dynamic leadership ability, hires and train staff, and positively motivates staff to promote
maximum performance.
• Choose, update, and use computer and point of sale machinery systems.
• Frequently move, transport, or install 30-50 pound packages and boxes.
• Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods and to move about the
retail space.
• High School Diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Qualification:
• B.A or B.S. in business, retail management, or related industry.
• Specialty retail experience.
• Startup retail experience.
Anticipated Salary Range:
$35,000 to $55,000
