Elk Grove Historical Museum: Museum Coordinator

Hours: Flexible work schedule including nights and weekends up to 24 hours per week
Salary Range: $16.00 - $20.00

Under the direct supervision of the Art/Special Events Manager, the Museum Coordinator is responsible for the operation of the Elk Grove Historical Museum, including but not limited to staffing, budgeting, marketing, artifact curation, educational and recreational programming, and special events. 


  • Assist the Program Manager with special events and educational activities 
  • Artifact curation of various items donated to the Museum
  • Responsible for the overall achievement of short and long-term goals
  • Prepare the annual Museum budget, including fee recommendations and capital project proposals
  • Develop and maintain cooperative relationships and effective communications with internal and external customers
  • Responsible for seeking supplemental funding through grants, sponsorships, and donations
  • Prepare payroll, program evaluations, and monthly reports as assigned
  • Recruit, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate volunteers and staff 
  • Develop goals and objectives as required by the Management Team
  • Act as the liaison to the Historical Society, attending all board meetings
  • Evaluate staff performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance
  • Build community awareness and work with marketing department to promote events and programs
  • Editor of quarterly Historical newsletter
  • Perform the job safely and in compliance with district policies, procedures, work and safety rules
  • Be familiar with the safe operation of any equipment necessary in accomplishing required tasks.


  • Assist with programming as needed
  • Regularly inspect and report to the Art/Special Events Manager on the cleanliness and operations efficiency of the Museum
  • Attend workshops, seminars, regular meetings hosted by various organizations that provide information crucial to the development of the job position


  • Moderate physical work (lifting up to 50 lbs.)
  • Must work closely with staff
  • General work area is indoors, in a smoke-free environment with controlled temperature and fluorescent lighting
  • Subject to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions
  • Physical agility to maintain mobility from site to site
  • Ability to set-up for programs and special events
  • Subject to modified/flexible work schedule including nights and weekends
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work on numerous projects at the same time
  • Must have computer skills (Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Forms)
  • Must work well with people in a team-based environment
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision 
  • Work closely with the Historical Society
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Works under the supervision and direction of the Art/Special Events Manager
  • Must be safety conscientious and use good judgment at all times
  • Valid driver’s license


  • Minimum of three to five years’ experience in the areas of management, leadership, and public relations.  
  • Bachelor’s degree in Museum Administration, Parks and Recreation, or closely related field is preferred.  
  • Must be CPR certified or willing to obtain within 3 months
