Executive Director

The Elgin Public Museum of Natural History and Anthropology, a small community nonprofit in Elgin, IL, seeks a positive, energetic, creative, and goal-oriented leader to serve as Executive Director. This is a part-time salaried position. Requires some weekend and evening hours. Work schedule is flexible.


Include the management and operation of the museum and museum collection, reporting to the Board of Directors. Duties include, but are not restricted to short and long-term planning, policy development, budget preparation;  and monitoring, development and implementation of EPM programs and services. The Executive Director represents the EPM in the community, participates in events which increase awareness of the museum and its programs, expands community outreach, and develops partnerships.

Skills and Expertise Required:

Supervisory skills, especially as relevant to a part-time and volunteer staff; demonstrated skills relating to financial and administrative management of an non-profit organization.

Ability to serve as an articulate and positive spokesperson for the EPM. Interpersonal and team interaction skills; ability to work with a diverse community.

Experience in development and fundraising, including foundation and government grants as well as corporate and private donations; ability to develop partnerships and identify creative solutions.

Financial record-keeping and budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, and reporting.

Knowledge of current small museum professional best practices

Proficient with PC environment and following applications: MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, PastPerfect, QuickBooks, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram

Ability to meet the physical demands of working and transporting materials in an historic building with non-standard stairs.


Relevant Bachelor's degree and 3-5 years' work in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience, demonstrating ability to support a non-profit organization and manage service for a small museum staffed by part-time employees and volunteers.  Prior museum education/experience is preferred, non-profit management is desired.

Location: The Executive Director will be based at the Elgin Public Museum in Elgin, IL.
