Cedarhurst Center for the Arts

Executive Director

Cedarhurst Center for the Arts, an AAM accredited museum, operated by the John R. & Eleanor R. Mitchell Foundation, seeks a dynamic Executive Director to oversee the operation of a $1.7 million budget and 19 staff members.  Cedarhurst features six galleries including an outdoor gallery with over 70 large scale contemporary sculptures on a 90 acre wooded campus. Surrounded by nature trails and peppered with wildlife, Cedarhurst’s Mitchell Museum has a permanent collection of late 19th, early 20th century American paintings by renowned artists such as Mary Cassatt, George Luks, Robert Henri, and John Singer Sargent. Cedarhurst is financially secure with an endowment to sustain the future, giving the leader of this 45 year old institution the foundation to expand its relevance and influence in the region.

Located at the crossroads of I-57 and I-64 in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, the Mitchell Museum on the Cedarhurst campus includes temporary/changing galleries, a permanent collection gallery, the Beck Family Education Center which provides hands-on creative art stations for young people and families, an acoustically sound Performance Hall for music concerts that doubles as an event space, and a commercial kitchen for in-house events and rentals. Cedarhurst is a picture perfect venue for indoor and outdoor weddings, receptions, special and corporate events. The Shrode Art Center, a separate building on campus, boasts an exhibit gallery, studio workshops and classes for children and adults year-around. Two other stand-alone venues on campus offer meeting and event rental space, as well as occasional artist residencies.

Cedarhurst has a strong educational component and serves area schools with curriculum support through a variety of student programs as well as in-school programs. Cedarhurst serves over 15,000 students annually.

Cedarhurst’s mission is to generate enthusiastic participation in and support for the visual and performing arts in Mt. Vernon and the surrounding region; and to provide opportunities for enjoyment of the arts and increased awareness, understanding, and appreciation for the arts.
