  • IAM is working continually to empower the museum community through programs, partnerships, and resources. Whether it is finding funding, strategic planning, board development, exhibit design, developing educational programming, or care of collections, IAM provides resources to its member museums to instruct in the field’s best practices.  Museums have unique struggles that continually challenge the preservation, interpretation, and care of their collections.  Some alarming facts from IMLS “Connecting to Collections: A Report to the Nation” include:
  • 2.6 billion items of historic, cultural, and scientific significance are not protected by emergency plans
  • 92% of historical societies have no disaster plan for their collection
  • There are 4.7 million works of art in danger of damage beyond conservation
  • 52 million paper artifacts are in need of preservation

IAM works to empower the Illinois Museum Community through:

  • Professional development workshops promoting best practices
  • Access to the IAM Lending Library, resource files, and a reference service
  • Access to annual Scholarship Program to be used to attend professional meetings, workshops, and seminars
  • Access to Museum Grant Program for funding consultation services, technology, conservation, exhibits and educational programming, and professional training
